Jan Nethercote discovers a gem on our doorstep in the Cheshire countryside

WHEN I was asked if I would like to spend a weekend away at a hotel in Wilmslow I wasn’t exactly jumping for joy.

A sunny week in the Maldives or perhaps a short break in Barcelona would have been nice.

But I prepared to be grateful for the opportunity and boy was I glad I did.

For I have discovered a gem right on my own doorstep. The four-star Pinewood on Wilmslow Hotel nestles in a quiet country lane in the heart of the Cheshire set in easy reach of the M6, M56 and M60.

Originally owned by the Menzies Group, the Pinewood is now privately run coming under the umbrella of the Best Western Hotels Group. General manager John Scott took over the reigns four months ago at a well-established and well-situated property consisting of 58 rooms on two floors.

On arrival we were greeted by John before being directed to our room on the second floor with executive bed (bigger than a kingsize) and a bathroom which had my husband exclaim “That’s the best bathroom I’ve ever seen in an English hotel.”

I had to agree. The room was a good size and there was ample cupboard and drawer space. I was particularly delighted that there was a ‘real’ wardrobe with a door. Who ever thought it was a good idea to hang all your clothes out on view?

After freshening up we went down to the private dining room to enjoy an extensive buffet prepared by head chef Stephen Jarvis. The food was beautifully displayed and consisted of local dishes including Manchester hotpot and Manchester tart.
