North Wales spa break is refreshing getaway

Quay Hotel and Spa

NORTH Wales has long had a special place in the heart of Scousers. From Colomendy to Conwy it’s always been a favourite for school trips, weekends away or walking.

It’s not hard to see why.

Drive west for an hour or so and you’re surrounded by green valleys, snow-capped mountains and lovely stretches of coast.

The base for our North Wales weekend away was The Quay Hotel and Spa.

The location is superb. Set on Deganwy Quay, right on the edge of the Conwy estuary, you can watch the tides ebbing and flowing to expose sandbanks and tasty snacks for the birds that fly overhead.

Every night we dropped off to sleep with the gentle tink-tink-tink sound of the rigging on sailing boats moored out in the estuary.

Whatever the weather it’s worth sitting outside on the balcony after dark. Look up on a clear night and you’ll see a carpet of stars that as a city-dweller you rarely get to see. Look back up the estuary and Conwy Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is beautifully lit up.

You could be forgiven for spending the whole of your break holed up in The Quay. The restaurant serves great food, hours can be luxuriated away in the spa, the rooms are extremely comfortable and the bathtub is deep enough to drown in.

But you’ve got fantastic walking country right on the doorstep. We didn’t get in our car for two whole days and instead walked along sandy beaches, climbed green hills and stood on summits with a 360-degree view of North Wales.
